Quality of LifeAlthough the region is vast, our cities are compact. Commuting to work takes a fraction of the time that it does in larger urban centres. Imagine, you could go home for lunch. In spite of the modest size of our cities, our economy is remarkably diverse. All the major growth industries work here – aerospace, energy and environmental technologies, natural resources, marine/ocean sciences, high-tech, communications, health and veterinary sciences and performing arts to name a few. Diversity is part of our heritage. Not just in our economy, but in every part of life. You can see it on the streets where heritage buildings stand side-by-side with modern architecture. Taste it at the local market. Hear it in cafés, parks or on campus. Travel is convenient. We’re closer to Europe than any other point in North America. It’s easy to fly back for business or pleasure from one of four international airports. Travelers can easily connect by air, rail, ferry and highways to the rest of Canada and the United States. There are twenty-one universities and colleges here, more per capita than any other region in Canada. Your children can get a higher education and a good job, close to home. The cost of living is lower here than it is in the large metropolitan centres of North America – much lower. Houses are affordable and properties are large. International visitors are astounded that we still have oceanfront properties available. Streets are safe and the crime rate is low. |
